7.2.1. Maintenance

In use periodically examine the rechargeable battery, support it in the loaded state and purity.
If at external examination of the battery dribble of electrolyte through cracks in walls of the case or in covers is revealed, then the battery should be removed from the car and to send to repair.
Of pollution, oxides and electrolyte the battery is cleared the rags moistened in 10% solution of liquid ammonia or the calcinated soda. Grease tips of wires after cleaning with a thin layer of technical vaseline or oil for the engine and densely fix on output probes of the battery.
Decrease in level of electrolyte during operation usually happens due to water evaporation therefore for replenishment of electrolyte add the distilled water in the rechargeable battery. Use of tap water is forbidden as impurity (chlorine, iron, etc.) in it destroy the battery.
Check electrolyte density in each element of the battery by means of the areometer.
By means of a pear gather in the glass cylinder electrolyte from an element. The areometer will emerge, at the same time density of electrolyte will correspond to that division of a scale of the areometer near which there is liquid level.
On new cars the rechargeable batteries ready to use i.e. which are filled in with electrolyte and charged with a density of electrolyte identical at all seasons of the year of equal 1,28 g/cm3 are installed (on the car UAZ-31604 – 1,29 g/cm3). Depending on climatic zone in which the car is operated density of electrolyte needs to be brought to the values given in tab. 21.
If temperature of electrolyte is higher or below 25 °C, then make the relevant amendment to the indication of the areometer, using these tab. 22.
Do not measure electrolyte density right after a dolivka in the accumulator of water or after launch of the engine by a starter; in these cases subject the battery to short charging small current or let's it stand 1–2 hours (without charging) in order that electrolyte density in all elements became identical.
Density of electrolyte allows to define degree of state of charge of the battery (tab. 23).
Put the battery discharged more than for 25% in the winter and more than for 50% in the summer on charging. The battery 6ST-66 is charged with current 6,6 A, the A24750 or A34770 battery – current 5 A at the turned-out traffic jams. Exercises are done before achievement of constant tension on conclusions of the battery and density of electrolyte within two hours.
If at the end of charging the electrolyte density (determined taking into account the temperature amendment) differs from specified, then modify it. At the increased density select a part of electrolyte and add the distilled water. If density of electrolyte is lower than norm, select it from an element and add electrolyte with a density of 1,40 g/cm3.
After adjustment of density of electrolyte continue battery charging within 30 min. for electrolyte hashing. Then switch-off the battery and in 30 min. measure
its level in all elements. If the level of electrolyte appears below norm, then add electrolyte with a density corresponding to this climatic area (see tab. 21). If the level of electrolyte is higher than norm – select its surplus a rubber pear.
